IIHF World Junior Championship 2023: Team USA has made final cuts to their training camp roster for the 2023 IIHF World Junior Championship and Washington Capitals 2022 second round draft pick Ryan Chesley, who was selected for Team USA’s preliminary training camp on December 5th, has survived the final round of cuts.
Team USA now has 25 players on their roster. The IIHF has made a provision for this year’s championship to allow for two more players in addition to the typical 23-man roster that has been allowed in years past. Therefore, Team USA’s roster is essentially set.
Team USA currently has eight defenseman (above) on their 25-man provisional roster, so Chesley is not assured of a starting role in their first game against Latvia on December 26.
Chesley is a 6’-0″ right-shot defenseman in his debut season with the University of Minnesota Golden Gophers Men’s team. He scored his first goal for the team just days before departing for Team USA’s training camp.
A native of Mahtomedi, Minnesota, he had stints with Shattuck-St. Mary’s Development program and the United States National Team Development Program, with whom he recorded 44 points in 85 games played with the U.S. Development team and National Under-18 Team.

World Juniors 2022: It was a disappointing ending to a promising World Juniors this past summer for the USA. After winning all four group games, the Americans were upset by Czechia in the quarterfinals, ruining the USA’s chance at a medal.
But that is in the past, and the USA has its eyes on returning to the podium at the 2023 World Juniors. New head coach Rand Pecknold has finalized his roster for the upcoming games taking place in the Maritimes.
The key returners for the United States are defenseman Luke Hughes and forward Logan Cooley. The two first-round selections were instrumental in the team’s success at the 2022 tournament and will be relied upon again this winter.
Looking at the new faces for the USA, Cutter Gauthier, Jimmy Snuggerud and Lane Hutson are the three that stand out as likely to be the most impactful. Gauthier and Snuggerud played on a line with Cooley when the trio were with the U.S. U18 national team, and could join forces again. Hutson has excelled as a freshman in the NCAA and could provide offense from the back end.

Shane Wright and Dylan Guenther return to the World Juniors stage after foregoing the summer competition. The two were on Canada’s initial 2022 roster. In addition, 2023 draft stalwart Adam Fantilli makes his debut at the World Juniors.
Canada defeated Finland 3-2 in the gold-medal games of the 2022 tournament, thanks to a goal by Blue Jackets winger Kent Johnson. No one has won more golds than Canada, and the country can pick up its 20th gold medal with a win at this year’s 2023 World Juniors.
